The Cure For Cabin Fever!

Trenary, MI – Roweena  Langin went adventuring to the far away destination of Trenary to experience a local Upper Peninsula of Michigan winter fun tradition; the Trenary Outhouse Classic!  The event combines local culture with a creative, campy sense of humor, BBQ, and beer giving folks a chance to get outdoors for some fun, “Yooper style.” The 21 Ever Trenary Outhouse Classic will have you smiling all the way to the finish line!

On Saturday the town of Trenary hosted their annual Outhouse Classic. It is a family friendly competition amongst neighbors and friends that has been taking place for 21 years.  The roles are simple: build a portable outhouse in your spare time, bring it to the races, and when it is you turn move it as fast as you can from the starting line to the finish line.  The races are divided into age categories with a cash prize and trophies for first place and cash for second, and third place.

Arriving I paid my $2.00 entry fee, got a funny button, and was surprised to find how big it was.  The place was packed with people of all ages looking to cure their cabin fever, enjoy the creativity gone into the outhouses, have some fun, and share some laughs.  The atmosphere was laid back, as far as everyone was concerned there was no life outside of the racetrack.  There was just you, your friends and the 12 pack you brought with you.

The outhouses where not the only things that are fun to look at. The hats people had on where just as entertaining.  The Outhouse Classic event also gives a cash prize for the best fur hat! I saw fur hats to hats knitted by grandma.  Hats that only served as a fashion statement to hats the where ideal for 40 below.

I highly recommend taking your family and friends there for a day of relaxation and clean fun.  You may even want to bring your own outhouse!
