Marquette, MI – The Babycakes Muffin Company nestled comfortably in Marquette’s downtown district has become a mainstay business since it’s opening in 1988.  However it serves more than just delicious food to the community here it also serves as a popular community meeting hub where folks of all ages can be seen at all times of the day to meet up within it’s cozy atmosphere.  Babycakes, more than a muffin company!

Growing up here in Marquette I remember Babycakes as the first “cool” cafe giving me my first taste of a coffeehouse “experience” beyond that of the doughnut shops or diners I was accustomed to.  I had friends who worked their first jobs there rising at the crack of dawn while the reat of us slept in to make the signature muffins which served as the mainstay of their diets.

Upon returning to Marquette after more than 20 years I was happy to see the lights still on at Babycakes; excited for the opportunity once again to indulge in some muffins (and the best mocha latte I’ve ever had; perhaps due to their use of freshly ground organic fair trade coffee beans in all their espresso drinks.)  Since then I have come to discover that it is a thriving central meeting place within the community here.  The excellent food and atmosphere make it a haven for intimate business meetings (lap tops are standard features amonst patrons here) and social affairs.  Not to mention the walls are decorated with art by different local artists on a monthly basis.

Beyond their famous muffins Babycakes also features homeade breads that deserve equal status as well as 3 different daily soup choices, sandwiches, and salad options which all rotate on a seasonal basis.  We recently visited on a Friday afternoon and tried the smoked salmon soup which was one of the best chowders I have ever eaten!  Just thinking about it I want to go back for more…

I was also delighted to learn that Babycakes is dedicated to green practices! Kudos to them for being leaders in the local business district on sustainable environment friendly practices.  All cardboard, newsprint, glass, plastic, & tin items are recycled.  They even compost all their organic waste into nutrient rich soil.  Keep an eye out for a sign out front offering free compost when they have more than they can use.  Babycakes also supports local farmers where they purchase the majority of their produce and eggs.  It’s always a win win situation when you support local businesses that support local businesses.

You can’t go wrong with Babycakes, a quality venue whether you’re looking to pick up some quick eats to go or sit down and pass the time with a friend, business associate, or good book.
