Remember those who fought for our independence as you celebrate the fourth in fun but safe ways.

Marquette, MI –  Loud booms, cheerful screams, and dark skies lit up by magical colors all embody what July fourth is about. It’s that time of year again where we celebrate America’s Independence. The fourth of July is a time for friends and family to gather and be grateful for the privileges one has in this country.  In almost every town across the states you can find people wearing their red, white, and blue apparel to show their pride.

A day full of parades, family gatherings, fireworks, hanging at the beach, maybe even having a few cold ones is just some of the things people will do on the fourth. Before you go and enjoy the beautiful day that many fought for there are some precautions everyone should take to have a safe yet fun holiday.

The smell of a barbeque, the sizzling sound of a beef patty,  children playing in the yard, and that one person in charge of filling everyone’s stomachs is the fun part of gathering for the holiday. Grilling is fun but can also be dangerous making it important to pay attention to the grill at all times. Chief Jeff Kontio from the Negaunee Township Fire Department said the safest place to grill would be outside in a yard and keep children away.

“Make sure to grill where children will not be playing,” Kontio said. “And always keep an eye on the grill.”

There are many different kinds of grills you can purchase whether it be powered by gas, electric, or charcoal.  But what are some of the dangers associated with grilling  and which one is safest you may wonder?

“Electric grilling is the safest,” Kontio said. “Gas and charcoal could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.”

There are some families who have traditions for the fourth.  Jack Dorr a Nothern Michigan University student and Marquette local said going to the fourth of July parade and watching the fireworks is part of his tradition.

“Everybody has their own little spot to watch these events,” Dorr said. “Ours is usually in front of Old City Hall on Washington St. for the parade, while we watch the fireworks from a small beach next to the Lake Superior Theater Co.”

It is important to remember also to be cautious when around fireworks. The great spectacles in the sky can be an awesome sight but being too close can be dangerous.

“The biggest danger is being too close,” Kontio said. “Make sure to stay away from blocked off areas. Kontio has some tips for families to have a safe but fun fourth.

“Be smart about your grilling and fireworks,” Kontio said. “If you are lighting your own fireworks make sure that they are not aimed at people and that everyone watching stays a safe distance away.”

Celebrating the fourth of July is meant to be a day filled with happiness and joy and while remembering those who fought for our independence.

The Marquette parade will start Friday, July 4 at 2:00 p.m. Fireworks in lower harbor at dusk!
