It doesn’t take more than a trip down the beauty aisle to see that there’s no shortage of potions, lotions, and oils that promise clear and glowing skin. However, if you’re like most people who struggle with dryness, blotchy skin, or reoccurring acne you probably have a product graveyard full of half-used bottles somewhere on a neglected shelf in your bathroom. In my experience, there is no magic product when it comes to healthy skin. To be sure, some products are better than others, but even the best products are only masking the issue. The best way to guarantee that your skin is healthy is to make sure that YOU are healthy. Healthy skin comes from the inside out. Here are my favorite tips for the healthy skin.

Eat your dark leafy greens

You know the type- spinach, kale, mustard greens, etc. Dark leafy greens are the power house of the vegetable world. Nothing else even comes close to packing the nutrients per calorie as these guys. Vitamin E found in these greens help to keep your skin healthy as you age. Plus, dark leafy greens are a great source for antioxidants! All of this helps the body repair, renew, and grow older more gracefully.

Fish oil

Or also called Omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3’s help balance the inflammatory properties of omega 6 fatty acids. While Omega 3s are found in fish and fish oil, omega 6 fatty acids are found in grains, pastas, breads, and cereal. When your ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 are skewed and you become dominant in omega 6s as most of us are, your inflammation increases. On your skin this can look like redness, blotchy skin, or swelling. To balance your fatty acids and help lower inflammation, reduce the amount of omega 6 fatty acids in your diet, or supplement with a good quality fish oil.

Stay hydrated

A good goal is to drink close to half of your body weight in ounces. So, if you weight 140 pounds, shoot for about 70 ounces of water each day, especially if you’re exercising! A good habit to get into is to drink 8 ounces first thing in the morning before your cup of coffee or tea.

Sweat

Whether from good old fashioned exercise, or by sitting in a sauna, sweating helps clear your pores. If you make a habit of this, you’ll want to make sure to follow the previous tip! Being dehydrated will leave your skin dry and flaky.

Probiotics

We all have millions of bacteria inside of our gastro-intestinal tract. In fact, we have more bacteria in our guts than cells in our body, and we need them to be healthy. The healthier your gut, the healthier your skin. Taking a good quality probiotic helps to make sure that your bacteria are happy. Happy and healthy bacteria make for happy and healthy skin.

Give yourself a bedtime

Closing your eyes each night gives your body a chance to rest and repair. If you aren’t getting enough sleep, your body isn’t getting a chance to catch up. Find a bedtime that you can make work and stick with it!
