Old Team Rivalries Make For An Exciting Game Of Hockey

Marquette MI- The most anticipated hockey game for NMU fans finally came to pass last weekend. On January 9, 2015 NMU and Michigan Tech fans dressed in their best team colors and stormed the Berry Events Center, to lose themselves in the long lived rivalry. 3706 people packed themselves into the stands to cheer on their teams, drowning the arena in a hurricane of noise.

The Wildcats and the Huskies stepped onto the ice with claws sharpened and fangs bared in fierce determination to defend their schools. NMU’s Brock Maschmeyer was the first to score with a power play goal at 09:43 in the first period. The Huskies looked at the score and decided they did not like the deficit. After some fast skating and quick passing of the puck, 23 seconds later Tech’s Tanner Kero found the back of the net tying the score. In the last minute of the period Maschmeyer made his second goal of the period giving NMU a 2 to 1 lead over Tech.

The second period both team’s goaltenders became brick walls, stopping all shots on goal leaving the score NMU 2 Tech 1.

The third period was all about penalties. NMU had 3 miner and 1 major penalties. Tech accumulated 1 miner, 2 major, 1 ten minute misconduct and 1 game misconduct. While the guys came and went from the penalty box both teams managed to score goals. At 04:12 NMU’s Dominik Shine made a power play goal giving NMU a 3 to 1 lead. At 13:24 Tech’s Tyler Heinonen made a power play goal closing the deficit by 1. With Tech’s 5 to 3 man advantage at the 15:51 mark, Shane Hanna tied the game with a power play goal ending the period 3-3, sending the game into overtime.

Both teams failed to score in overtime ending the game in a tie. Saturday night’s game at Tech in Houghton should be a fiery continuation as both teams strive to take home a win!
