Everybody’s favorite and most colorful 5K race came to Marquette on Saturday June 28

Marquette, MI – Marquette’s lower harbor was packed with runners of all ages eager to get messy and participate in the 5K race, RUN OR DYE. The race stations people through out the course with different colored powder dye to throw on the runners as they go by; right out of the starting gate people where covered in pink powder.

The fun did not stop at the finish line. The race provided a DJ to entertain the racers after they finished creating an after party atmosphere. The most entertaining activity he came up with, was a dance off.  3 woman and 3 men battled with one another to be called the best dancer at the race.

The race also had some surprises that where not planned by the race organizers. The crowd was witness to a small flash mob who cleared a small space and preformed a well-choreographed dance. Immediately following the dance there was a marriage proposal; the woman answered yes. The festivities came to an end with the crowd throwing packets of dye into the air covering everyone in a cloud of colors.

The Run or Dye event is great family fun. I very much enjoyed the event and all I did was photograph it.  Next time the event takes place in our area I plan on attending it as a participant!

A few pointers for camera safety when attending this function:

  • The powder gets everywhere. Bring a plastic bag or two to cover your equipment and a rag to wipe down everything.
  • Bring only what you need- there is no point in risking your unused equipment getting dirty.
  • If at all possible use a longer lens so you can stay out of the dust cloud.
  • Pay attention to the direction the wind is blowing and do your best to stay up wind.
  • Use a lens hood- this reduces the amount of dust that will get on the glass.
  • The runners shed dust as they pass by, it can get really thick.
  • You will NOT make it through the event clean.
