written by students of the NMU Environmental Campaigns class, PR432

Marquette, Mich – With winter setting in, memories of summertime sunshine and lush green gardens may begin to fade, but students in an Environmental Campaigns class at NMU are keeping those green dreams alive by hosting a demonstration on green smoothies and tour of the NMU Hoop House next week.

Sustainable agriculture and season extension are very important to many people living in the Upper Peninsula. Hoop House’s allow for increased food security in colder climates and foreground sustainability. A team of students in PR 432, an Environmental Campaigns class, are partnering with the NMU Hoop House to host a fun and informational event on green smoothie making and the importance of season extension.

According to PR 432 Student, Melissa Orzechowski, “Most of the members of our group knew about the NMU Hoop House from working at the Marquette Food Co-op or from previously volunteering, so we knew the neat things happening there, but we also suspected many of our fellow students had never been there or did not know about it. Because it is a hidden gem, we thought we should use our talents and efforts to share it.”

Abbey Palmer, Special Projects Coordinator at the Marquette Food Co-op, manages the NMU Hoop House. She is always looking for new opportunities to bring people to the hoop house and increase involvement. “I hope this event this event will help people see, first-hand, how season extension works. To see green spinach still growing inside, while winter has set in early, makes the point that we can grow more of our own food for more of the year in the UP,” says Palmer.

The event begins at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2014.
Participants should meet in the Jacobetti Center lobby. Following the workshop, participants will get a chance to tour the Hoop House and learn more about the project.
